PETER'S VERSION OF GRACE
We mustn't also forget that Peter was a teacher of grace. Though his version of true grace may be partially different from that of Paul (because Paul was given his message directly from the ascended Jesus), they do teach the same message -- that of holiness.
1 Peter 5:12
In the last chapter of Peter, he declares that he has testified that "this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand".
What did Peter say about grace? Let's quickly review the chapter:
Chapter 1
13: ...gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end...
14: ...obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts...
15: ...as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy...
16: ...Be ye holy; for I am holy
17: ...call on the Father, who...judgeth according to every man's work...
22: ...ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth...love one another...
Chapter 2
1: ...laying aside all malice...guile...hypocrisies...envies...evil speakings,
2: ...desire the sincere milk of the word...
11: ...abstain from fleshly lusts...
12: Having your conversation honest...
13: Submit yourselves to every ordinance...
15: ...put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16: ...not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness...
17: Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
24: ...we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness...
Chapter 3
8: ...be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing...
10: ...let him refrain his tongue from evil...that they speak no guile:
11: ...eschew evil, and do good...seek peace, and ensue it.
15: ...sanctify the Lord God in your hearts...be ready always to give an answer...with meekness and fear:
16: Having a good conscience...
Chapter 4
1: ...arm yourselves...
2: ...no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh...but to the will of God.
7: ...be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
8: ...have fervent charity among yourselves...
9: Use hospitality...
10: ...minister the same one to another...
13: But rejoice...
19: ...commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing...
Chapter 5
5: ...submit yourselves unto the elder...be subject one to another...with humility...
6: Humble yourselves...
8: Be sober, be vigilant...
9: ...resist stedfast in the faith...
12: ...this is the true grace of God...
